Losing Mac: Our Beloved Therapy Horse

Trying to find the exact words in certain situations through our journey is hard when you are tossed into so many directions and emotions. And just when I think the wave is settling down, another one comes and hits us again. We have to yet again, grieve a situation, adapt, learn another lesson and somehow keep moving on.

In this case, we are sad to announce that we lost our beloved therapy horse ‘Mac’ right before awareness day this year. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that our Mac has crossed the rainbow bridge to greener pastures. We can find comfort knowing Mac is no longer in pain.

Mac was 14 years old. He was blind and we as a family had comfort knowing that this rescue horse was guiding Owen in a way that he needed and Owen guided Mac in the way he needed. They bonded, they played and they loved. You could just feel it during every session. There was a point when we thought about helping to raise money for Mac to have surgery done on his eyes, but after looking into the surgery, he wasn’t able to be a candidate. In the end, his good eye developed a cataract which ended up hemorrhaging and causing him to be in a lot of pain.

Owen still talks about him during this break time of the pandemic and asks when he’s going to see him again (he doesn’t understand) and it breaks my heart. To Owen, ‘horse therapy’ means ‘Mac.’ We are so blessed that someone made this lovely stuffed horse of Mac for him before we knew anything would happen to him. Now he has something physically and all the photo memories to look at as much as he wants. Thank you Mac, for physically keeping my boy’s body so strong, helping us happily get through some tougher chapters, being silly and playing hide and seek, being loving and allowing my boy to touch you in whatever way meant love to him that day, creating and celebrating some wonderful milestones in our journey with Owen and giving him all of those special memories with you. We love you.

You can view more memories and fun photos of Owen & Mac through our past blog posts.

“You only meet a ‘Once in a lifetime horse’... once in a lifetime! Mac has truly been that horse for all of us here at NKT... Thank you, Mac for all the riders you’ve carried and all the hearts you’ve filled with joy.”

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the sweet woman who made his snugly ‘Mac horse’ for him. You’ll never know how much this means to him and us as a family. xx
